From a Welsh garden to Tanzanian harvest

Amazing though it may seem, banana trees now growing in central Tanzania have their roots in North Wales.

Volunteer Cathie, who has worked with Tanzania Development Trust setting up digital platforms, was impressed with our work at the school and wanted to do more to help.

So she sowed some seeds in her garden in Mold, North Wales, then sold the flowering plants to raise funds for Tumaini School. We then used the £500 she raised to buy a wide variety of vegetable seeds and fruit tree seedlings such as banana, papaya, avocado and oranges.

All of these are now flourishing, thanks to the care our young mothers have spent on weeding and watering.

The therapeutic benefits of gardening are well known, so Cathie’s little welsh seedlings have been helping in so many ways. Soon we expect to be able to harvest the maize, spinach and other vegetables to also boost the girls’ diets and nutrition.
